Further testing:
Positive antibody test with both warm and cold autoantibodies.
During his hospital stay, he was given blood transfusions and steroids to treat autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA). He remained on steroids outpatient until his hemoglobin stabilized, which was about one week after discharge.
Patients with COVID-19 often develop complications that are associated with a hyperinflammatory state. Accordingly, COVID-19 has been increasingly associated with autoimmune conditions. There have been case reports of COVID-19-triggered AIHA, typically within two weeks after COVID symptoms, which usually demonstrated either warm or cold autoantibodies. This case presents a unique pediatric patient with AIHA that occurred two months after confirmed COVID-19 that showed both warm and cold autoantibodies.
